Love God: Abide in His Word

Matthew 22:35-40; Psalm 1

Part 1 - Connect Questions

1. Where have you seen God working this past week or is there anything you'd like to thank Him for?

2. Are you carrying any burdens or facing any challenges?

Give thanks for what God has done and pray for one another's burdens.

Review the previous lesson.

What do you remember from the previous passage?

How did you apply what you learned?

Did you share it with anyone?

Part 2 - Discovery Questions

Bible Passage - Matthew 22:35-40; Psalm 1

First, tell the story in your own words.

Then, read the passage from the Bible two times. (ask others to read if comfortable)

Ask the group to practice re-telling the passage in their own words.

Discuss these questions:

3. What does this passage teach us about God?

4. What does this passage teach us about people?

5. What else stands out to you?

Practice Discipleship Tool: Read the Word - S.0.A.P.

“Instead, the law of the Lord gives them joy. They think about his law day and night.” Psalm1:2

The S.O.A.P. method provides a simple guide for anyone to use as they spend time with God, reading and applying His Word.

Scripture: Choose a passage and read it two times. Write down verses or phrases that stand out to you or that you want to remember.

Observation: Lord, what are you saying in this passage about yourself? About humanity?

Application: Lord, how should I apply this passage to my life?

In answering this question, consider things like:

  • Is there a truth about God or a promise I should believe?
  • Is there something I should praise or thank God for?
  • Is there a command that I should obey?
  • Is there an attitude, thought, or behavior I should confess?
  • Is there something I should pray about for myself/others?

Pray & Pass it On: Talk with God about what you’ve read. Praise Him for anything that He has revealed about His own nature. Ask forgiveness for any sin that has been exposed. Pray for anyone whom He has brought to mind. Ask Him to help you walk in obedience so that He would be glorified.

Lastly, ask Him: Lord, whom should I share this with? Prayerfully reflect on who might need to hear the truth that God has revealed to you. If someone comes to mind, write down their name, pray for them, and consider a time you could intentionally share what you’re learning with them.

Practice the S.O.A.P. method together. Give everyone a pen and paper. Set a timer for around 15 minutes. Put on some background music. Everyone reads Psalm 119:9-16 on their own and writes down their answers to the S.O.A.P. questions. Come back together and ask everyone to share their answers.

Reading Challenge

Before we meet again, everyone reads Mark 13-16. Use the S.O.A.P. method at least two times this week along with your reading.

Other elements to add when you sense the group is ready:

Ask the Holy Spirit and whoever is discipling you for ideas and direction.

  • Sing a worship song together.
  • Take the Lord's Supper (communion) together. Only those who are genuine followers of Jesus should participate, so it's best to wait until everyone, or nearly everyone, in the group has decided to follow Him.
